English is a dry subject, so sometimes to spice it up I introduce some interesting tidbits. The other day, I mentioned that it was a 400 to 1 odds to win the World Series and if you bet $1,000, you will be collecting $400,000. The Washington Nationals beat the Houston Astros.

How did I know this? My husband, of course.

I have a few students who love sports. I wasn’t advocating for betting but rather trying to get their interest and perhaps demonstrate how life can be interesting providing you are willing to look at the big picture.

In April, the odds for the Nationals to win the World Series was 400 to 1, so……

Then I mention James Holzauer. Do they watch Jeopardy? No, they haven’t heard of him. I pull up the video and they watch. To those who beat the odds, and this is one lesson we all need to learn, isn’t it?

Note to self: I just wish I didn’t have to keep the information on a file card to remember sports statistics.
